Punta Cana - Travel Guide to Punta Cana

Punta Cana

Punta Cana is located in the easternmost part of the Dominican Republic. It is actually a municipal district in the province of La Altagracia. The name Punta Cana in Spanish means Tip of a white hair. The region is famous for the beaches facing the Caribbean Sea and the view of the area from an airplane resembles a white hair due to the presence of these white long beaches.

The beaches lying north of the cape include Playa Bavaro, Playa de Arena Gorda, Playa Macao, Playa Ubero Alto, and Playa de El Cortecito. The main beaches located south of the cape are Juanillo, Cabo Engano, Cabeza de Toro, and Punta Cana. The village of Bavaro lies to its north. Higuey is the closest town situated 28 miles away. The shallow ocean waters with many natural marine pools make the spot ideal for bathing. No wonder this area has become an excellent tourist destination.
